Beaumont’s sports rehabilitation team provides multidisciplinary care to every athlete to encourage a safe and speedy return to sports. Our sports medicine doctors, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and other staff members coordinate care and services across disciplines so every patient gets the type of care they need to thrive. Four of the sports medicine principles we live by at Beaumont are to offer timely care, minimally invasive procedures whenever possible, advanced rehabilitation programs, and injury prevention training to keep you and all our athletes healthy and ready to play.
If you come to our clinic with an orthopedic injury or condition, you can expect expert care from your first appointment through your return to sports and beyond. After a thorough evaluation of your injury, your doctor and therapist will work together to develop a treatment plan that may involve manual therapy, customized core and extremity exercise programs, and functional training that’s specific to your sport (or sports). With your complete recovery in mind, we’ll provide expedited access to all our services to encourage your ability (and confidence) to return to the game you love. Our services include athletic training, athlete evaluations, concussion evaluation and treatment, injury treatment and prevention, and orthopedic physical therapy.
Athlete training
Physical therapists, athletic trainers, and other members of the Sports Rehabilitation team at Beaumont see professional, student, and recreational athletes. We evaluate, treat, and help prevent injuries through training and physical therapy. We can help you prepare your body for sports whether you’re just getting started or you’ve been sidelined by an injury or health condition.
Athlete training may include:
Our staff will work closely with you to develop an individualized training program to help you meet your goals and get you back in the game both quickly and safely.
Athlete evaluations
If you or your child has sustained an injury that is limiting participation in sports, the team at Beaumont can help. During athlete evaluations, one of our physical therapists or athletic trainers will assess the injury by performing a physical exam and talking to you about what caused the injury, how much pain you’re experiencing, what physical limitations you’ve had since the injury, and what you’ve done to treat it. After the assessment, he or she will recommend treatment.
Concussion treatment
A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury that athletes shouldn’t ignore. Most people wrongly believe that concussions can only occur when someone suffers a head injury by hitting their head or being hit on the head. While it’s true that many concussions are a result of a head injury, some people experience concussions without direct head trauma. For example, two people running into each other at high speed can lead to a concussion even if their heads didn’t touch. Falling can cause a concussion as well, even if you never hit your head during the fall.
Regardless of how a concussion occurred, it’s important to be evaluated and treated. If you or your child have any symptoms of a concussion – or even if you don’t but sustained a head injury – make an appointment with a doctor.
If you or your child has been diagnosed with a concussion, the experts at Beaumont can help. We will evaluate you or your child to assess the injury and recommend a concussion treatment program.
Treatment for concussions and post-concussion syndrome will vary depending on the severity of injury and tolerance for treatment options. Treatment usually includes an exercise program and work with a physical therapist to help improve function while minimizing effects of the concussion.
Throughout treatment, we will work on injury prevention and adjust the therapy schedule to get you back to your normal activities as soon as it’s safe. We will also work with other doctors and therapists to make sure all treatment works together toward the same goal – rehabilitation.
Injury treatment and prevention
Our Sports Rehabilitation program can treat your injuries and help you prevent future injuries. Our physical therapists and athletic trainers are experts in treating your injuries and getting you back to your pre-injury state faster. And to help prevent future injuries, our comprehensive program teaches proper techniques for all your athletic endeavors, from warmups to strength training to endurance training and conditioning. The goal of prevention programs is to reduce your risk of injury while also improving your performance.
Your therapist and other providers will develop an individualized program for you based upon your current health and ability, your goals, and the sports you participate in. We’ll focus on building the strength and endurance necessary to get you where you want to be by teaching you the best exercises (and the best form) for you.
