Free nutrition-specific tours promote healthy eating
Healthy eating starts with the food you purchase at the grocery store. With more than 45,000 different food items from which to choose, selecting food that will improve the health of you and your family can be confusing and overwhelming.
Beginning Feb. 5, the Meijer store located, at 5150 Coolidge Highway in Royal Oak, will team up with Beaumont Health nutritionists to host a series of free health tours. The tours will help area residents navigate the grocery store for healthy food choices. All tours will begin at 10:30 a.m.
Knowing what foods to look for, where they’re located and understanding how healthy they are for you can be an empowering experience,” said Erin Dolinski, Beaumont registered dietitian. “Education offers shoppers the first line of defense in preventing and treating chronic disease.”
Each tour will focus on a specific area of nutrition and provide helpful tips, such as understanding the layout of a grocery store and where to begin shopping; understanding and reading food labels; learning about affordable and time-saving meal ideas; and providing shopping tips for your specific health needs.
Seven tours are planned through August:
- Feb. 5 - Diabetes
- March 19 - Weight Management
- April 9 - Diabetes
- June 4 - Heart Health
- July 2 - Weight Management
- July 30 - Diabetes
- Aug. 20 - Heart Health
The tours are free, but space is limited. Register by calling Beaumont's Nutrition Services at 248-898-3054.
