How To Prepare for an Ultrasound During Pregnancy

A full bladder is very important for the ultrasound exam. Empty your bladder 90 minutes before exam time, then consume one 8-ounce glasses of fluid (water, milk, coffee, etc.) about an hour before exam time.

We recommend a two-piece outfit so we can access your abdomen without you removing your clothing.

You may eat normally prior to having a fetal ultrasound.

Amniocentesis Patients - DO NOT SKIP MEALS

All of the standard procedures for a fetal ultrasound should be followed for an amniocentesis. However, if you have a blood type that is Rh negative, you will need a RhoGam injection after your procedure. You may purchase this in the outpatient pharmacy upon completion of the amniocentesis. The pharmacy accepts most major credit cards as well as personal checks.

Reminders

  • Children under age 12 must be supervised by an additional adult and may not watch fetal echocardiograms or invasive procedures, such as amniocentesis.
  • Up to 3 additional guests may join you in the ultrasound room for a screening ultrasound.
  • You will receive a picture as a memento.
  • No videotapes or cameras are allowed in the ultrasound room.
