Strokes, traumatic brain injuries and diseases of the nervous system need careful, thorough medical care once the patient is admitted to the hospital. For the most serious cases, Beaumont offers state-of-the-art technology and highly trained personnel to monitor and care for patients.
Beaumont provides excellent neuro inpatient care for patients with neurologic injuries and conditions as a result of:
- stroke
- spinal cord injuries
- intracranial hemorrhage
- subarachnoid hemorrhage
- traumatic brain injuries
- subdural and epidural hematoma
- cerebral contusion
- post-traumatic epilepsy, seizures and amnesia
- concussion
- skull fracture
- penetrating head injury
- brain herniation
- shaken baby syndrome
As a result of these conditions, patients may be suffering from severe symptoms, including multiple functional deficits, paralysis or even coma. To ensure the best outcomes, Beaumont follows nationally established neurotrauma guidelines in caring for patients.
Because Beaumont sees a significant number of neurotrauma patients on a regular basis, our team of neurosurgical specialists has considerable experience in the diagnosis, treatment and management of these complex cases. To provide balanced, attentive care of critically ill patients, our interdisciplinary team includes full-time neurological and critical care specialists, neurosurgeons, general surgeons, rehabilitation specialists, anesthesiologists and advanced nursing care.
On our neuro inpatient critical care units, use of continuous, real-time intracranial pressure monitoring ensures that the most common symptom in neurological patients - swelling and bleeding in the brain - is accurately tracked and treated before it damages the brain further. A patient's vital functions, speech, and eye responses are check every hour--or more frequently, if necessary.
With responsive, personalized care, patients can recuperate and regain the strength they need to move on to the next phase of their recovery.
When it becomes necessary, we take into account the patient's needs and wishes for end-of-life care, emphasizing a compliance with nationally recognized biomedical ethical standards.
Harold & Marian Poling Neuroscience Center
At Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital, the Harold & Marian Poling Neuroscience Center provides a specialized inpatient care unit for patients with neurological conditions. This dedicated neuroscience unit with 66 beds and nine monitored critical care beds focuses on caring for stroke patients. The unit offers many features designed to make recovery more successful, including:
- a day room where stroke patients can access the Internet, watch TV, read a newspaper, and even play cards in a home-like environment, allowing patients a better transition to a home setting after discharge
- inpatient rehabilitation on the unit, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, all coordinated according to the patient's individual needs
- stroke education for patients and families, ensuring that recovery continues after discharge
