Beaumont Health offers a variety of classes for the expectant and new parent, from childbirth education to caring for your newborn. The class offerings include virtual and web-based education. Childbirth Education Options

Beaumont's childbirth classes empower the pregnant mother and her support person to feel more confident during labor and birth. Topics include pregnancy, birth and postpartum information including comfort measures for labor and the role of the support person. For your convenience, we offer the Childbirth Education class either as a web-based, independent study or a virtual class.

Ask The Childbirth Education

 

Unsure of which Childbirth Education class to attend? Then register for this FREE class. Participate in a LIVE question and answer session with a Beaumont RN, childbirth educator. Learn about what to expect upon arrival at the hospital until your discharge home. Beaumont education classes, support groups, and resources available for pregnant and postpartum families will be discussed.


Understanding Birth

 

Beaumont's childbirth classes empower the first-time birthing parent and support person to feel more confident about their approaching labor and birth. In this comprehensive, LIVE, interactive class, a Beaumont RN, childbirth educator presents the stages of labor and birth, medical interventions, pain relief, cesarean birth, and postpartum information. Included in class discussion are comfort measures for labor and the role of the support person.


Short on time? Then register for Understanding Birth Express. This shortened, condensed class, focuses on labor, birth, medical interventions, pain relief, and cesarean birth. This LIVE, interactive class is for families who primarily want information about labor and birth and is taught by a Beaumont RN, childbirth educator. It does not cover natural comfort measures, postpartum recovery, and newborn procedures.


Cesarean Birth

 

This class is recommended for families planning a cesarean birth, also known as C-section. The goal of the class is to help you understand the cesarean birth process, anesthesia for the birth, along with what to expect during your hospital stay, recovery at home, and newborn care after birth. The class is taught by a registered nurse, perinatal patient educator.


Natural Birth

 

The goal of Beaumont’s Natural Birth Class is to teach the birthing parent and the support person natural comfort measures for an unmedicated birth experience. This LIVE, interactive class will increase your confidence and assist you in developing a personal plan for your baby's birth. Comfort practice sessions are included as part of the class. These coping skills will help you work with your body and mind to increase comfort, enhance the birth process, and decrease or eliminate the need for pain medication. This class is taught by a Beaumont RN, childbirth educator.


HypnoBirthing® - The Mongan Method

 

HypnoBirthing® - The Mongan Method is as much a philosophy of childbirth as it is a technique for achieving a satisfying, relaxing and stress-free method of birthing. HypnoBirthing ® - The Mongan Method, teaches the mother and support person techniques for a safe and satisfying birth through relaxation, visualization, and special breathing. This LIVE, interactive class is taught by a Beaumont RN, certified HypnoBirthing educator.

UNDERSTANDING BIRTH – INDEPENDENT STUDY Q & A

 

For your convenience, Beaumont offers an Understanding Birth Independent Study option. This web-based childbirth education course covers the same information as our Understanding Birth class. After your review of birth content and videos, attend a LIVE, interactive question and answer session facilitated by a Beaumont RN, childbirth educator.


Breastfeeding

Understanding Breastfeeding

 

This class is for expectant parents who want to learn about initiating and sustaining breast milk feeding. In this LIVE, interactive class, a Beaumont RN, childbirth educator will discuss milk production, the nutritional value of breast milk, positioning baby, latch, the support person’s role, challenges, resources, and additional helpful information.

For your convenience Beaumont offers an Understanding Breastfeeding Independent Study option. This web-based breastfeeding education course covers the same information as the Understanding Breastfeeding class.


Parenting Education

Understanding and Supporting the Postpartum Parent

 

This class was formally known as Dads Only and Expectant Partner

This class is for those who support the birth parent after the birth of the baby - partner, support person, father, mother, dad, mom, boyfriend, girlfriend, wife, husband, co-parent, grandparent, friend, family member, female and/or male nurturer, mother figures, and anyone that wants to understand the importance of supporting the birth parent in the postpartum period. 

You will learn about the early weeks of recovery after birth, postpartum health, and be able to offer support for the birth parent. Education will be provided on getting the laboring birth parent to the hospital, care for the birth parent and newborn during the hospital stay, and the first few weeks of care and safety of the new baby at home. You will become knowledgeable in baby health, characteristics, behaviors, crying patterns, how to comfort and current safety recommendations. Baby basics: holding, feeding, burping, bathing, diapering, and safe sleep practices will be reviewed. 


NEW PARENT PREP CLASS

 

The New Parent Prep Class is intended for expectant parents and is led by a Beaumont RN or licensed professional counselor. Topics include the realities of new parenthood during the challenging first three months, how to recognize baby blues and perinatal mood disorder, and the impact a newborn has on relationships. Learn how to communicate effectively, ways to maintain positive relationships, and home preparation to welcome your new baby. There is no fee for this class.


Baby Care and Safety

 

This class will help prepare you to safely care for your baby during the first six months after birth. Formally known as the 'Understanding Your Newborn' class, this education series now includes current safety and child proofing recommendations. In the first session of the class series, we will explore newborn behaviors, crying and comforting, health and wellness, feeding, and skin care. The second session will focus on infant safety. Topics discussed include car, home, product, and baby safety. Emergency Preparedness, Infant CPR and Choking first aid are also presented. This is not a CPR certification class.

Beaumont's Baby Care and Safety class is taught by a Registered Nurse, Perinatal Patient Educator. This class is two sessions presented in 2.5 hours per class. It is LIVE and interactive using Teams. Please have a doll/stuffed animal and a newborn diaper during class to practice.
