When should you see an orthopedic specialist about back pain?
Most back and neck pain can be treated at home with self-care methods, such as over-the-counter pain relievers and heat/ice therapy. Taking it easy can be helpful too, but you should be careful not to rest too much because not moving much can actually make your condition worse. It’s usually better to perform gentle, slow movements rather than resting a lot.
If your back pain doesn’t go away on its own within a few weeks, you may want to see a doctor. If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor to make an appointment right away:
- Pain that shoots down one or both legs
- Pain that gets worse, especially at night when you try to sleep
- A fever that accompanies the pain
- Pain that causes numbness or tingling in one or both of your legs
- Back pain that begins after a fall or high-impact accident
- Loss of control of bowel or bladder
- Weakness in your legs or arms
Treatment options
Our spine specialists help you manage and treat chronic back and neck pain and provide a full range of treatments. And when you see them for your spine, neck or back problems, they will consult with you, learning about your condition and how it’s affecting your life, before helping you choose the best treatment approach for you and your lifestyle.
