When women support each other, amazing things happen
Sharing & Caring is a non-profit organization devoted to the education and support of breast cancer survivors.
Sharing & Caring brings women of all ages together through awareness, strength and support.
A breast cancer diagnosis initiates an avalanche of questions and worries. The newly diagnosed patient may not know what to do or where to turn. Sharing & Caring offers education and support for breast cancer patients and their families at the time of diagnosis, during treatment and beyond. All are welcome and services are free of charge.
About Sharing & Caring
Sharing & Caring is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of people touched by breast cancer through education and support. We strive to:
- Decrease emotional distress, anxiety, confusion and feelings of isolation
- Improve coping skills and stress management
- Gain up to date, reliable information from health professionals who are experts in their field
- Enhance quality of life and emotional health
- Increase feelings of empowerment and control over wellness plan from increased knowledge and support
- Provide social, physical, educational, emotional and spiritual support
- Improve mental health outcomes in distressed survivors
- Build lasting relationships and improve psychosocial well-being
In addition to our support groups and educational programs, we are happy to provide health planners for the newly diagnosed. Sharing & Caring provides a binder that is packed with information and resources.
The health planner provides basic information on what to expect during the different stages of the treatment process as well as definitions of difficult terms and procedures. It also serves as a reference throughout treatment and is a useful place to keep track of medical reports, questions for providers, appointments, pathology reports, medications and symptoms.
Program History
Established in 1998, by beloved physician Dr. John Ingold, with a generous donation from JoAnne and Donald Petersen, Sharing & Caring evolved from a small group of activists committed to serving the newly diagnosed women in our community to now becoming the largest breast cancer and support program in Michigan.
In the past twenty six years, Sharing & Caring has provided education, support, resources, and breast cancer health planners to several thousands of women.
The name Sharing & Caring was agreed upon because it captured the spirit of what the Petersons and Dr. Ingold wanted the group to be about – information sharing and the strength gained from the caring of others facing the same issues.
