Unlike coronary artery disease, structural heart disease doesn’t typically affect the blood vessels that supply the heart muscle with blood and oxygen. Rather, structural cardiac defects may be present at birth (congenital) or form later in life as a result of infection, wear and tear from aging, or underlying disease processes.
