Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is a maximal supportive therapy for patients whose lungs and/or heart are failing where none of the traditional treatments have been effective.
Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital is an adult ECMO center utilizing a multidisciplinary, team approach for the management of ECMO patients. Our specialized team of intensivists, critical care nurses, perfusionists, ECMO nurse specialists, respiratory therapists, consulting physicians, physical therapists, and social workers care for these critically ill, complex patients in a specialized surgical intensive care unit. The medical director of our ECMO Service, Dr. Felicia Ivascu, received her training at the University of Michigan under the guidance of Dr. Robert Bartlett.
Our ECMO attending physicians are always available to discuss your patients to determine if they are a candidate for our ECMO program and, if needed, recommend additional resources that are in the best interest of the patient. Early consultation with the ECMO team allows for safe and timely transport of patients at high risk for failing maximal therapy. Patients who are transported to our center are done so by a specialized, highly-trained and equipped flight crew.
