- whether a hearing loss is affecting a child's ability to speak and learn
- the anatomy of the human ear, brain, and nerves
- causes of hearing loss
- rehabilitation related to the ear and hearing
- the use of hearing aids
- lip reading and sign language techniques
In treating patients, audiologists often work on a team with ear, nose and throat physicians, as well as speech and language pathologists.

Beaumont is one of a
handful of hospitals that are state-designated pediatric diagnostic
audiology sites certified to follow up on babies who show deficiencies
in hearing screenings conducted at birth. Our audiologists have
experience working with children and adults who have special needs that
make hearing testing and evaluation difficult, such as those who are
cognitively impaired, have suffered closed head injury, and those with
dementia.
