The American College of Surgeons has verified Beaumont Hospital, Troy as a Level II trauma center. The verification requires the hospital to have a trauma surgeon available within 15 minutes at all times and a quick response from specialists.
Timothy Bierema, M.D., Beaumont, Troy trauma director, said, “This is a sign to the community that our team is prepared to handle complex emergencies and traumatic injuries 24/7.”
Traumatic injury is the leading cause of death for Americans younger than 40 years old, and the fourth leading cause of death for all age groups, behind heart disease, cancer and stroke.
“When a trauma case comes through our doors, it brings together staff from all departments who work together to save lives and care for patients and their families,” said Nancy Susick, president, Beaumont Hospital, Troy. “This recognition demonstrates how our team is living Beaumont’s mission of compassionate, extraordinary care every day.”

To receive the Level II trauma center verification, hospitals undergo rigorous review and must have 24-hour availability of a medical team with specially trained health care providers able to care for severely injured patients. A team of reviewers experienced in the field of trauma conducts the on-site review.
Beaumont, Troy’s Level II Trauma Center includes:
- surgeons on-call 24/7 and in the hospital within 15 minutes of a critically injured patient’s arrival
- Beaumont One air medical transportation service available to airlift patients between hospitals and from accident scenes
- doctors and nurses specially trained in trauma care
- state-of-the-art diagnostic and testing equipment
- a trauma team ready when the patient arrives and available to care for the patient throughout the hospital stay
- family support, including social workers and pastoral care
- a trauma registry to aid trauma research
- intensive trauma education for staff, availability of sub-specialty services like orthopedics, neurology, cardiovascular care, emergency room physicians and rapid access to surgical care, are required to achieve the verification.
As of September 2016, there are 38 verified trauma centers in Michigan. Seven of Beaumont Health’s eight hospitals are verified as Level I, II or III trauma centers.
