Life Lessons from Beaumont Volunteers

volunteer-week by Beth Frydlewicz, Interim System Director of Volunteer Services, Beaumont Health

Each day I come to work not knowing what will come my way. The one consistent part of my day is sharing conversations with our volunteers and not a day goes by that I don’t feel inspired by the life lessons they share.

When talking with new volunteers, “making a difference” is the most repeated phrase when asked why they want to volunteer. When asked why they chose Beaumont, their answers are often filled with stories of personal experiences – “My mother/friend/sister was a patient,” “The excellent care,” “Someone I know is a volunteer,” or “I know my time as a volunteer would be valued by the staff and patients.”

Our volunteers come from all walks of life. Our younger volunteers are here to learn about careers in health care, while others are going through life transitions, such as retirement, loss of loved ones or job changes. All of the volunteers that come through Beaumont’s doors believe that giving back to others fills your heart and soul.

Based on recent conversations with many of our volunteers, here are just a few of the life lessons I’ve learned:

  • Changes in life can be difficult, but manageable with the right support.
  • We never know what is around the next corner, so don’t sweat it.
  • Life always has humor attached – we just need to look for it.
  • When volunteers have great trainers, they become great volunteers.
  • Don’t pass up opportunities – for travel or fun.
  • You never stop learning. Be open to taking risks so you will grow.
  • Be open to the fact that our world is changing every day.
  • A positive attitude is the difference between making someone feel great or ruining their day.
  • The person standing before us needs our understanding and patience.
  • By embracing one person’s idea, we can create new and wonderful things.

Not a day goes by that I am not thankful for the commitment of Beaumont’s volunteers. They truly are caring people, caring for people.
