It's Time to Get Your Flu Shot

Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Anyone can get the flu, but people at higher risk of developing serious flu-related complications include people 65 and older, people with chronic conditions, pregnant women and children under 5. The best way to prevent flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.

Planning for Your Flu Shot

Plan to protect your family during flu season:

  • Where can I get the flu shot? In addition to your doctor's office, many employers and insurance companies are offering new options for getting your flue shot this year.
  • What can I do to prepare? Once you decide where you are going, check to see what protocols are in place for that location. Do you need and appointment? Do they provide pediatric vaccines? What do you need when you go?
  • When should I get it? Most experts recommend getting your flu shot in October or November for optimal protection throughout flu season.

Flu and COVID-19

While the flu and COVID-19 are both contagious respiratory illnesses, they are caused by different viruses. The symptoms of flu and COVID-19 are very similar, so it may be hard to know what you have based on symptoms alone. Testing may be necessary to get an accurate diagnosis. Flu season typically runs from October through March, so you can expect to see an overlap in the threat of the two viruses this fall and winter. The best way to protect yourself and your family is by getting a flu shot.

Treating the Flu

Most people who get the flu have mild symptoms and can treat at home without medical care or antiviral drugs. If you have flu symptoms, stay home and avoid contact with others. You can treat your symptoms by staying hydrated, resting and taking over-the-counter medications. If you are concerned about your symptoms, talk to your doctor or visit your nearest emergency room.
