Cane and Able Stroke Recovery Group

The Cane and Able Stroke Recovery Group is one of the oldest and largest stroke clubs in Michigan. The group focuses on:

  • support and encouragement
  • education about strokes and stroke recovery
  • education about community related issues
  • recreation post stroke
  • socialization for community re-entry

Beaumont Physical and Occupational Therapy Rehabilitation Resources

  • Neuro After Care Rehab Care Exercise Group: Continue exercising in a supervised environment after discharge from formal therapy.
  • Bend, Breathe, and Balance Exercise Group: Enhance flexibility, core strength, balance, and relaxation. Must be independent.
  • Modified Constraint-Induced Therapy for the Lower Extrlemity: Focuses on lower extremity weakness, primarily stroke patients. Must be independent.
  • Modified Constraint-Induced Therapy for the Upper Extremity: Focuses on upper extremity weakness, primarily stroke patients. Must be independent.
  • Therapeutic Yoga Classes: Designed to improve your core strength, balance, and flexibility; and improve the health of your body and mind. Must be independent.
  • Center for Adult Communication Disorders:  Support groups meet every second Wednesday of every month.

Driving Resources

  • Driver Rehabilitation: Provides a variety of services to those who would like to become a safer driver or resume independent driving. This service is not covered by most insurance.   • Social Security: You can file for Social Security Disability (SSD) in person at a local Social Security Administration Office (SSA) or call 800-772-1213 or apply online (you can apply for SSD only online- Not SSI).
  • The Law Center for Social Security Rights provides a free consultation to discuss your claim, your rights, and future economical survival.
  • Allsup provides a no cost disability evaluation to determine the likelihood of eligibility, develops an accurate record, and guides applicants through the disability process.
  • Support & Advocacy: YoungStroke, an advocacy organization formed to specifically address the unmet needs of young adult stroke survivors and their caregivers.
  • Vocational rehabilitation counseling at Michigan Rehabilitation Services helps those with disabilities learn their strengths and determine suitable employment goals
  • Patient Advocate Foundation case managers help patients with issues regarding reasonable accommodations in the workplace.
