There are very few illnesses that require a woman to stop breastfeeding. If you become ill, let your health care provider know that you are breastfeeding your baby.
Medications and mother’s milk
- While many medications are safe with breastfeeding, always check with your health care provider before taking any medications or herbal supplements.
- If your physician prescribes a medication, make sure you let him or her know that you are breastfeeding. Chances are there is a medication that can be prescribed that will allow you to continue nursing.
- If it is necessary to stop breastfeeding as a result of a medication or diagnostic test, contact your lactation consultant. She will be able to help you develop a plan to support your milk supply until your baby can come back to breast.
