Some common causes of hip pain

There are many conditions and injuries that can cause hip pain and dysfunction. Some of the more common causes are:

  • Arthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Tendonitis
  • Hip fractures
  • Stress fractures in the hip
  • Broken hip
  • Hip labral tear
  • Strain of the tendon or muscle
  • Groin pull or groin tear
  • Bone cancer or cancer that has spread to the bone
  • Piriformis syndrome

When should you see a hip specialist?

The hip joints are two of the largest joints in the body, which makes them prone to both injury and problems from wear and tear. If you’re having problems with your hip, how do you know whether you should see a doctor?

If you see any deformation, especially after an injury or fall, you should see a doctor right away. You should also make an appointment if you cannot move your leg or put any weight on it without experiencing pain in your hip or groin. If you have sudden pain, intense swelling or redness/fever, you should also call your doctor.

You don’t have to wait it out and suffer through pain just because it doesn’t seem like a serious problem. If your hip has been sore or aching for a while, and over-the-counter pain relievers worked for a bit, but have since stopped working, you may want to call. If ice, heat and pain relieving medication aren’t doing the trick after two weeks, make an appointment.

Treatment options for your hip

Your treatment options will vary depending on what type of hip condition or injury you have, the severity of your symptoms and how they are impacting your life, the long-term prognosis of surgical repair versus non-surgical options, your preference and tolerance for different treatments, your age, and other factors.

When you see an orthopedic hip specialist at Beaumont, you can expect a partner in your own treatment plan. Together, you can decide whether you want to have surgery now or wait and see if other options might be successful. If you do want surgery, your surgeon will talk with you about what your surgical options are.
