Diagnosis of Balance Disorder

Diagnosis of a balance disorder  is complicated because there are many types of balance disorders with many contributing factors.

Beaumont offers a multidisciplinary approach in the diagnosis of balance disorders. Management of balance disorders can involve a variety of specialists and subspecialists depending on the condition causing the disorder. Ear, nose and throat specialists (otolaryngologists) are usually involved, as are neurologists.

Diagnosis of balance disorder begins with a clinical history and physical examination by a physician who is expert in this field. Testing equipment available at Beaumont includes:

  • electronystagmogram (ENG)
  • videonystagmogram
  • hearing testing or audiogram
  • auditory brainstem response (ABR)
  • functional MRI
