Dr. Stallion leads Beaumont Children's surgery team with novel treatments and advancements

To whom much is given, much is expected. So, I wake up every day trying to give back because I've been blessed with such an opportunity to do this.

Dr. Anthony Stallion

Dr. Anthony Stallion, pediatric surgeon, joined Beaumont Children’s in 2018 as Section Head of Pediatric Surgery with the goal of expanding Beaumont’s pediatric surgery programs and bringing cutting-edge therapies to Southeast Michigan.

Four years later, Dr. Stallion and Beaumont’s pediatric surgeons have already introduced more minimally invasive surgeries (including minimally invasive thoracic surgery), an adolescent bariatric program and innovative cancer therapies such as HIPEC (Hyperthermic IntraPeritoneal Chemotherapy). A potential hearing program and urologic program are in the works as well. Dr. Stallion says they’re just getting started.

“HIPEC is the perfect example of a new therapy that we’re offering for children that are at end stage for certain types of abdominal cancers,” explains Dr. Stallion. “They've essentially exhausted all of their other options and I think it's another therapy that demonstrates how far we’ll go to save our children and to try to extend their lives.”

For Dr. Stallion, who previously practiced at Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital, Rainbow and Babies and Children’s Hospital and Carolinas HealthCare System, the opportunity to practice and lead Beaumont Children’s meant taking an already top-notch organization and making it consistent with what is offered nationally.

In his current role, Dr. Stallion oversees a team of board-certified, fellowship-trained pediatric surgeons. From appendicitis to complex congenital anomalies, the multidisciplinary Beaumont Children's pediatric surgery team works together to provide the best possible care for children.

Thinking of surgeons making advancing care at Beaumont Children’s, Dr. Stallion mentions, Drs. Thottam and Haupert in the Beaumont Aerodigestive Center, Dr. Cesar Serrano in Pediatric Epilepsy and Neurosurgery partnering with Dr. Arndt, Drs. Akay, Novotny and Brahmamdam doing minimally invasive procedures and robotics and Dr. Morden’s work with chest wall deformities.

“All of us want to make sure we’re offering cutting-edge treatments for our children and always be forward-thinking from that standpoint,” says Dr. Stallion “We don't want the patients that we care for to lack in any therapy that we are able to provide.”

In addition to leading the teams at Beaumont Children’s, Dr. Stallion serves on multiple boards and advisory groups including the BHSH Beaumont Health Board and formerly the board of the American Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation and served as president of the Society of Black Academic Surgeons.

“It’s always been a passion of mine to use my position to inspire and lift others up. Coming from a disadvantaged background and been blessed with the opportunities to excel I want to help others do that,” says Dr. Stallion. “That’s especially true for underrepresented minorities that don't get the opportunity or don't see role models that they can try to mimic, because I really believe that it's hard to shoot for something you can't see.”

Whether it’s mentoring the next generation of pediatric surgeons or bringing novel treatments to patients in need, Dr. Stallion’s underlying motivating factor is providing the best possible care for children. “To whom much is given, much is expected. So, I wake up every day trying to give back because I've been blessed with such an opportunity to do this.”
