OR Nurse finds balance through family, wellness and faith

Whether she’s caring for patients in the operating room, raising her two children alongside her husband, or jumping out of an airplane to celebrate her birthday, Rajinder “Raj” Mahal, RN, lives her life with a steady level of drive and determination.

Born and raised in India, she married her husband, Sukhwinder, in 2010 and moved to the U.S. in 2011, where she enrolled in the RN to BSN program at Grand Canyon University in Arizona. She passed her boards in 2012 and started working at Beaumont, Troy.

Growing up, she always dreamed of working in medicine and her team at Beaumont gives her the opportunity to be an advocate and voice for her patients.

“Having surgery is a major life event,” Raj explains. “I am the patient’s voice while they are sleeping. Every action we perform as a surgical team is for their good. I go home at night and know, without a doubt, that I have helped make another person’s life a little easier.”

It’s that sense of belonging and teamwork that remind Raj she chose the right calling in life. “Everybody is equally important on the surgery team. I really feel like I’m working at the best place for me.”

Raj finds inspiration in many areas of her life including her family, her travels and her faith. But her true inspiration comes from her father.

“My dad is an Army officer in India. He’s my role model. The feeling of serving and taking care of people, I think that comes from him. He’s a dedicated, hard worker. Seeing him in his uniform fills my heart with pride.”

Family is everything to Raj, who is the mother of two. Gursaakhi, 9 and Shaan, 3. She and her three siblings are spread out across the world, but her mom and dad frequently travel between the U.S., Canada and India to see them.

In addition to travelling, wellness and faith are also really important to Raj.

“I do yoga and meditation the first part of my day every day. Also, I am Sikh, it’s something I believe in. My religion makes me believe in humanity, equality, serving people and caring for people. I carry that into the work I do.”
