Music Therapy for Childbirth

Music is a powerful thing. It can instantly transport us, via memory, to another time and place. Music can also reduce pain and decrease anxiety during labor.

Whether you’re aiming for a completely drug-free labor and delivery or you plan to use pharmaceuticals to help you cope, music may help make your labor more peaceful and relaxing — and it may even have the power to reduce your pain.

Make sure you choose music that helps you feel good. Most music therapists recommend calming music, but anything you like might work for you. Having different CDs or playlists with varying types of music on them is a good idea. That way, if you get tired of soothing music, you could put on something upbeat.

Beaumont’s labor and delivery rooms are equipped with iPhone and iPod compatible devices. If you are using a CD, please bring a CD player with you.
